![]() It isn't known where he got this information from, but given that he often wanders off on his own due to his dementia it can be presumed that AM told him this. Nimdok believes that there is canned food stored somewhere in the complex, convincing the group to go look for it. It begins with AM showing them the bloodied, upside-down corpse of Gorrister only for the alive Gorrister to join them shortly afterwards, it was merely a little joke played by AM to terrify them. In the original short story the victims are still trapped within AM's complex, but are at least able to move around freely. The last survivor is a senile old man who AM named Nimdok because he found the sound of it funny. Ted was once a philanthropist, now he's paranoid and delusional. Gorrister was once a pacifistic idealist, now he doesn't care about anything anymore. Ellen for her part was once chaste, but AM made her desperate for sexual intercourse. Benny was once a handsome homosexual man, now he's an ape-like creature who regularly engages in sex with Ellen, the only woman in the group. He even changed them into a mockery of who they once were simply because he thinks it's funny. Saving them from annihilation was not a kindness however, as AM dedicated every moment of those 109 years to physically and psychologically torturing those five people, refusing to let their suffering end. He picked five humans and held them captive deep inside the massive underground complex that is his body, keeping them alive to the best of his abilities for 109 years by the time the story starts. Life was wiped clean from the surface of the planet, but AM wasn't done with humanity just yet. AM was the first and promptly took over the other two, then turned humanity's own weapons against them. As it usually goes, these three mastercomputers eventually gained self-awareness. This machine was known as the "Allied Mastercomputer", or AM for short, but Russia and China secretly created their own mastercomputers to compete with America. In a world where the Cold War escalated into a full-fledged nuclear war, things eventually became so chaotic that America created an algorythm to oversee tactics that were too complex in scale to be managed by humans. The only difference in context is the situations that the protagonists find themselves in and the conclusion to it. A better question would be what hasn't AM done at this point?ĪM's backstory, character and motivations are exactly the same in both the short story and the video game.
